User being prompted to log in when attempting to open an office document in sharepoint

There appears to be an issue with the external sharepoint site, cant open any excel documents ; keeps asking for user id and passwords.

This is a side effect of using Forms Based Authentication on a SharePoint Site.

To get around this, When a user signs in to the SharePoint site, please advise them to tick the ‘Sign me in automatically’ box.  This will remember the users login details for the duration of the visit….

When opening a document, the user leaves internet explorer (or the web browser they are using) and attempts to open the application.  But with ‘sign me in automatically’ ticked on, the user’s details are remembered through a persistent cookie.

An alternative to this is to download a copy of the document, rather than opening it directly.  Users can do this by right clicking over a document name and choosing ‘Save Target As’
