Customising Application pages – relative URLs for portal site connection

So, the Portal Site Connection page of the Site Collection Administration section won’t allow relative URL’s. Never mind just create your own application page that allows you to do this, you can even cheat by copying the current Portal.aspx then commenting out the bit of the JavaScript that validates a HTTP or HTTPS entry.

We all know it’s bad to modify the core files in the LAYOUTS folder so I suggest taking a copy of the file and deploying it via a Feature to a different folder location (see the following article for help creating a feature (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms460318.aspx).

When adding your custom application page you’ll need to create a link to that page somewhere (Site Actions menu or the Site Settings) you can do that via the CustomAction node in the Elements file of your feature, check out the following resource which is a fantastic list of Custom Action identifiershttp://johnholliday.net/resources/customactions.html
