Unexpected error when attempting to modify or close down a web part in a SharePoint 2007 publishing portal site

Every time I attempted to edit or close down a failing web part from my SharePoint 2007 publishing portal site, I was kicked out to an error page with the following error message:

“An unexpected error has occurred.”

This occurs if a duplicate site is

Web Part Maintenance Page (WPMP)

To access the WPMP, append your url with ‘?contents=1’.

You will now be in the WPMP. This page provides the opportunity to manage your web parts. i.e. close, reset, delete etc.
